WPLG TV is a television station located in Miami, Florida, United States. It is an ABC-affiliated station serving the Miami market and the South Florida region. WPLG TV is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
The studios of WPLG TV are situated on Hallandale Beach Boulevard in Pembroke Park. The station’s transmitter is located in the south of Miami-Dade County.
WPLG, originally known as WLBW-TV, commenced broadcasting on November 20, 1961. Its establishment came about as a replacement for WPST-TV, which had its license revoked by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) due to the discovery of bribery involving one of the commissioners. L. B. Wilson, Inc., the sole bidder for the original channel 10 license that had not engaged in coercive actions, was granted a temporary permit to commence telecasting.
Although WPST-TV lost its license in July 1960, WLBW-TV had to wait for nearly a year before it could finally begin operations using different facilities. However, WLBW-TV hired several former WPST-TV staff members and acquired the ABC affiliation that WPST-TV held.
In 1969, WLBW-TV was sold to Post-Newsweek Stations, and the following year it was renamed WPLG in honor of Philip Leslie Graham. With notable on-air personalities such as Ann Bishop, Dwight Lauderdale, Bryan Norcross, Michael Putney, and Calvin Hughes, WPLG’s news department emerged as a local television ratings leader in the 1970s, a position it has maintained ever since.
Since 2014, WPLG has been owned by Berkshire Hathaway. Following the divestment of Post-Newsweek (renamed Graham Media Group), WPLG still maintains infrastructure and logistical ties to its previous ownership while operating under Berkshire Hathaway.
