About WOTV TV

The studios of WOTV TV are situated on Plaza Drive Southeast in Grand Rapids. The station’s transmitter is located in Middleville, Michigan.

It shares ownership with WOOD-TV, an NBC affiliate, and WXSP-CD, a MyNetworkTV affiliate. The stations have their studios in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and WOTV’s transmitter is located in Orangeville Township. WOTV is known as ABC 4 West Michigan due to its position on channel 4 on most cable systems in the area.

The presence of Channel 41 in Battle Creek is a result of the limited reach of WZZM, a Grand Rapids-based station. WZZM’s transmitter is located north of Grand Rapids and does not cover areas such as Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. Channel 41, Inc., a group of local businessmen, won the construction permit for channel 41 in 1970 and launched WUHQ-TV in 1971.

This created a unique situation with a split affiliation, as WUHQ-TV became an ABC affiliate. The station initially struggled with its local news programming, experiencing low ratings and frequent changes.

In 1991, an FCC-approved merger between WZZM and Channel 41, Inc. fell through, leading to WOOD-TV taking over the airtime of channel 41. This arrangement led to the creation of news inserts for the Battle Creek-Kalamazoo area, produced by WOOD-TV. When WOOD-TV reclaimed the WOOD-TV call letters in 1992, WUHQ-TV became WOTV.

The station continued to provide ABC programming, syndicated shows, and local newscasts from WOOD-TV. Although WOTV has fewer viewers than WZZM, it offers better signal coverage in the southern part of the market.
