The station’s studios are located on South 6th Street in downtown La Crosse, and its transmitter is located on Silver Creek Road in Galesville, Wisconsin.
News8000 signed on the air on August 8, 1954. It was originally a primary CBS affiliate, but it also carried programming from NBC, ABC, and DuMont. The station lost DuMont in 1956 and NBC in 1958. WKBT then shared ABC with NBC affiliate WEAU-TV (channel 13) until WXOW (channel 19) signed on in 1970.
WKBT is the flagship station of the News 8 Now television network, which also includes WXOW and WQOW (channel 7). The network produces a variety of local news and weather programming, as well as sports coverage.
WKBT is also a major affiliate of MyNetworkTV. MyNetworkTV is a programming service that airs syndicated programming on a delayed basis. News8000 airs MyNetworkTV programming on weeknights from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.
