The Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church was founded in 1789 by American churches that had separated from the Church of England during the American Revolution. The church’s name, “Episcopal,” comes from the Greek word “episkopos,” which means “overseer.” The Episcopal Church is governed by bishops, who are ordained to be the successors of the apostles.

The Episcopal Church’s beliefs are based on the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, and the decisions of its General Convention. The church’s core beliefs include the following:

  • The Trinity: There is one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus Christ: Jesus is the Son of God, who came to earth to save us from our sins.
  • The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, who guides and empowers us to live as Christians.
  • The Bible: The Bible is the inspired word of God.
  • The sacraments: The sacraments are outward signs of inward grace, and they include baptism, the Eucharist, and confirmation.

The Episcopal Church is a diverse church, and its members come from a variety of backgrounds. The church is committed to social justice and works to promote peace and understanding in the world.
