GAN-TV, operating on channel 2, is a television station licensed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, serving Eastern Iowa. It functions as an affiliate of both CBS and Fox. Owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, KGAN-TV provides a diverse range of programming, including local news, weather updates, sports coverage, and popular shows from both CBS and Fox networks.
The station shares studios with Dabl affiliate KFXA (channel 28) at Broadcast Park on Old Marion Road Northeast in Cedar Rapids. KGAN-TV’s transmitter is located in Rowley, near the junction of Buchanan, Benton, and Linn counties.
The station has a rich history, being the first television station in Eastern Iowa. It initially signed on as WMT-TV on September 30, 1953, serving as the radio counterpart to Cedar Rapids radio station WMT. From its inception, it has been a CBS affiliate. In its early years, channel 2 enjoyed dominance in the region until competitors caught up.
Ownership of WMT radio and television transferred to Orion Broadcasting in 1981, following the sale by American Broadcasting Stations. Orion Broadcasting later merged with Cosmos Broadcasting, leading to the separation of channel 2 from WMT and its renaming as KGAN under the ownership of Guy Gannett.
While KGAN held a strong position in news ratings during the 1980s, it gradually slipped to third place by the early 1990s, a position it still maintains in the market. Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired KGAN as part of its purchase of Guy Gannett in 1999. On January 1, 2021, the Fox programming previously aired on KFXA transitioned to a subchannel of KGAN, further expanding the station’s offerings. KGAN-TV remains committed to delivering news and entertainment to the Eastern Iowa community, providing a valuable source of information and programming for viewers in the region.
The station is dedicated to delivering comprehensive and timely news coverage, keeping viewers informed about local events, community issues, and important stories happening in Eastern Iowa. KGAN-TV actively engages with the local community through various initiatives, sponsorships, and community outreach programs. It aims to be a trusted source of news and information for the viewers in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding areas.
