The Independent Baptist Churches of America (ICBA) is a fellowship of independent Baptist churches in the United States. It was founded in 1949 by a group of Baptists who were dissatisfied with the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention.
The ICBA is a conservative denomination that adheres to the fundamental beliefs of Baptists, such as the inerrancy of the Bible, the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, and salvation by grace through faith alone.
The ICBA has a congregational polity, which means that each church is autonomous and self-governing. The ICBA does not have any authority over its member churches, but it does provide resources and support for them. The ICBA also has a number of educational institutions, including a seminary and a Bible college.
The ICBA has about 2,000 member churches and over 1 million members. It is the largest independent Baptist denomination in the United States.
The ICBA’s beliefs are summarized in its Statement of Faith, which states:
- The Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
- There is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of a virgin, and is fully God and fully man.
- He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day.
- He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
- He will return to earth one day to judge the living and the dead.
- Salvation is by grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
- Repentance and baptism are necessary for salvation.
- The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and is present in the lives of believers.
- The church is the body of Christ and is made up of all believers.
- The second coming of Christ is imminent.
- The resurrection of the dead and the final judgment will take place.
