The Church of God Holiness (COGH) is a Holiness Christian denomination headquartered in Anderson, Indiana, United States. It was founded in 1881 by Daniel Sidney Warner and several others. Warner had been a member of John Winebrenner’s General Eldership of the Church of God, whose members were called Winebrennerians.
He differed with the Winebrennerians on the doctrine of sanctification, which he held to be a second definite work of grace, and on the nature of the church, which he believed should be congregational.
The COGH has about 750,000 members in over 12,000 churches in the United States, Canada, and other countries. It is a congregational denomination, which means that each church is autonomous and self-governing. The COGH has a national body, the General Assembly of the Church of God Holiness, which provides resources and support to its member churches.
The COGH is a Holiness denomination, which means that it emphasizes the doctrine of sanctification, or the second work of grace, which believers experience after salvation. The COGH also believes in the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues. It is a charismatic denomination that emphasizes the gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, and healing.
The founder of the Church of God Holiness was the late Daniel Sidney Warner, who was its first general superintendent. Warner was a controversial figure, and his teachings have been criticized by some other Holiness denominations. However, the COGH remains a major force in the Holiness movement, and it continues to grow and expand its reach.
Here are some of the key beliefs of the Church of God Holiness:
- The Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
- There is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of the virgin Mary, and is fully God and fully man.
- He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day.
- He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
- He will return to earth one day to judge the living and the dead.
- Salvation is by grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
- Sanctification is a second definite work of grace that enables the believer to live a holy life.
- The baptism in the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues is for all believers.
- The church is the body of Christ and is made up of all believers.
- The second coming of Christ is imminent.
- The resurrection of the dead and the final judgment will take place.
